World Premiere: Shawn Mendes - "I Know What You Did Last Summer" [Full Audio + Review]
Not because Shawn Mendes has collaborated with Camila Cabello of Fifth Harmony it means he has decided to “sell out”. The song “I Know What You Did Last Summer” hears the Canadian singer-songwriter remaining faithful to his trademark sound, that is, acoustic songs where the guitar stands out among all instruments. This collaboration with Camila Cabello is the official lead single from Shawn’s upcoming re-release of his debut album “Handwritten”, which now has been re-named as “Handwritten: Revisited”, that will arrive in stores on November 20th.
How did these two become so close to have recorded a collaboration like this one? Well, Shawn Mendes have coincided at many events with Fifth Harmony. Therefore I’m sure it was at these run-ins where Shawn met Camila and became friends with the whole of Fifth Harmony. Although it seems Shawn’s friendship with Camila seems to be strongest one. Or is it that he picked Camila mainly because he considers her the best singer in the group? (Oooh, imagine if it’s this option. The shaaaade!)

“I Know What You Did Last Summer” was released today, November 18th, on iTunes and it is a mid-tempo acoustic pop song where both Shawn and Camila demonstrate that they are a ‘perfect match’ in terms of combining vocals. What’s the song about? Well, it’s about Camila having being unfaithful to Shawn. This is the horrible “secret” that she committed last summer. However, Shawn somehow already knows Camila cheated on him, but instead of facing her with the indisputable truth, he chooses to torment her by making gestures and taking nasty attitudes ("He knows dirty secrets that I keep / Does he know it's killin' me?") that will make her suspect that her world is about to be torn down - for he already knows, you fool!
Truth is that when this collaboration was announced, near Halloween, I thought that with a title like this, the song had to have a Halloween theme, or a spooky theme, and I thought to myself, ‘damn, they should have released the single back in Halloween them, and not in mid-November, what are they doing!?’, but now with today’s world premiere I realize the theme is totally the opposite and that they did the right thing not dropping it on October 31st, lol.
“I Know What You Did Last Summer” is a really good song, very Shawn Mendes-sounding, and no doubt that the fact it is a collaboration with Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello will make this a bona-fide pop hit. The only thing I’m going to criticize is that why Camila, the woman in the relationship, has to be the unfaithful part? Why does she has to be…the ‘slut’? Just saying…
