Trey Songz Releases Criminal Cover of "All I Want for Christmas Is You”: Dare To Hear It?
What did I just hear? R&B crooner Trey Songz has released a cover of Mariah Carey's holiday hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You” and it’s just plain awful. First; he isn’t respecting the original melody. Second; he just sounds awkward trying to do “pop” music. And third; it’s all a mess. Trey probably feels a bit “left out” during this time of the year where R&B/urban music is ousted by “merrier” songs and that’s why he decided jump on board the Christmas bandwagon. Many artists release covers of Christmas classics this month but the majority of them are always pop acts so seeing the like of Trey Songz dropping something and ESPECIALLY a cover of "All I Want for Christmas Is You” is surprising and DARING to the say the least.
I was honestly rooting for Trey to have given the Mariah hit a unique touch making it sound more R&B and soulful, or even totally flip it and make it “urban”, because there is no way in hell I expected Trey (freakin') Songz to simply cover the ORIGINAL "All I Want for Christmas Is You” as is…BUT that’s exactly what he has done! (*dies*). Ahh! I just can’t deal with this (not bueno).
Why didn’t he respect the original melody? Trey should’ve kept the same formula and just had added his vocals. This is just utter sacrilege. In any case, Trey Songz and pop-sounding music will never be a good match and this "All I Want for Christmas Is You” cover is solid proof. Just hear it for the laughs…nothing more.
