Single Review: DJ Khaled & Drake - "To The Max" / *Audio Included

drake to the max

As promised, DJ Khaled released his new single “To The Max”, featuring Canadian boy Drake, at 6am EST sharp today, June 5. “To The Max” is another song that will be featured on DJ Khaled’s forthcoming new album “Grateful” – due in stores later in 2017 via We The Best and Epic.

“To The Max” has some big shoes to fill, for it is the official follow-up single to “I’m The One”, which reached the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 quite quickly.

To The Max” is DJ Khaled and Drake’s fourth collaboration to date. The previous three were: “I’m On One”, “No New Friends”, and “For Free”.

REVIEW

Incredibly, I’m not feeling this. I was anticipating it but it has not met my expectations. Sounds very uninspired, doesn’t it? It almost feels like Drake recorded these verses for something else, shared them with DJ Khaled, and he just decided to record any random song with them. I feel a certain disconnection here.

First the beat: it sounds kind of cool but it’s not urban all the way. And I was expecting urban. It’s pulsating, fast-pace, dubstep-ish, and more on the “pop” side then.

And now the vocals: so little vocals! Where are the lyrics? It’s more production than lyrics. I literally felt impatient when I heard the instrumental went on and on and on in between verses.

I don’t know, guys. Drake’s verses are lit as per usual but I don’t find this to be a cohesive work, and definitely not one DJ Khaled’s best releases.

To The Max” will be a hit for sure because it has Drake on it but I was honestly something more exciting. And this has left me rather cold after the first listen. What about you?
