“Solo” Liam Payne Previews New Song, Direct Competition to Zayn?

Beware, Niall Horan and Zayn Malik, but especially Zayn.

Ex One Direction star Liam Payne used his favorite social media network, Instagram (he’s got 11 million followers there), to post a snippet of a new solo song over the weekend. We may not know the official title of this song yet but we do know that it was co-produced by Danny Boy Styles (Beyonce, The Weeknd) and Ben Billions (Meek Mill, Future), and co-written by Bibi Bourelly (Rihanna, Selena Gomez).

Liam’s mysterious new song has an R&B-pop sound and some racy lyrics, which makes the case that Liam co-wrote this with the image of her current girlfriend, UK pop star Cheryl, in mind. He sings, “I wanna make love to you / Be on to you / So hard for you”. Daaaamn!

liam and zayn together

At the beginning of this blog post I stated that Zayn was the ex One Direction member that should be the most preoccupied for Liam’s solo career and I said that because of the sound of this song preview of Liam’s. For the sound is similar to what Zayn is offering in his solo career; R&B-pop - which means Liam and Zayn will be direct competition in the near future. Now I understand why Liam and Zayn were signed by different labels in the US. There can’t be two artists with the same background (One Direction), same sound, and same target audience working for the same company. This is going to be one interesting “battle”, for it is likely that either at the end of 2016, or at the beginning of 2017, Liam Payne will release his debut solo single, and it is expected too that Zayn will drop his second solo album at some point next year. So there is the chance that we might see Liam and Zayn battling out to get a #1 hit on the Hot 100 at the same time. Can you imagine!? Either way, I personally believe more this R&B-pop genre in Zayn than in Liam. Why? Because I feel that this genre flows more natural and organic in Zayn, while in the case of Liam, it kind of sounds a bit too “forced”, in the sense that I think he thinks urban is what’s hot right now, people in his target audience think of it as “dope”, and it's an easy way to escape from the "One Direction box", so I think that's why he’s taking this route, and not because he has a sincere connection to this genre. I’ve always thought of Liam as someone closer to sensitive pop music.

*By the way, Harry where you at?
