Single Review: Camila Cabello - “Crying In The Club” / *Audio Included

camila cabello crying in the club

Make way because Camila Cabello has arrived.

After competing on “The X Factor USA”, doing a kind of long stint with Fifth Harmony, and dramatically departing the “Worth It” group, Camila Cabello today fulfills one of her life dreams: to launch a solo career. Her debut single “Crying In The Club” is now out (leaked on May 18th, officially released on May 19th via Epic Records). The song was co-written between Camila and Sia, and was produced by Benny Blanco. “Crying In The Club” will appear on Camila’s recently-announced first solo album “The Hurting, The Healing, The Loving”, which will hit stores “later in 2017”.

SO…

Let me give you a headline before I proceed with the full review:

*“Crying In The Club” sounds 2016 (i.e just a BIT dated), sounds more like a Sia song than something 100% Camila, and overall it’s a TAD weak of a debut single. I don’t hate it, I like it, but it’s just not what I was expecting. After SO MUCH HYPE, I was expecting to be completely blown away by Camila’s first solo single, and blown away I was not. I just liked what I heard and that’s it. No big reaction.

REVIEW: “Ain't no crying in the club (hey, hey) / Let the beat carry your tears as they fall baby”, sings Camila on the chorus of her new song over a laid-back tropical EDM production - a song she hopes serves as a back-up system for every girl out there who feel heartbroken and like their life is about to end because they’ve just been dumped. “You think that you'll die without him / You know that's a lie that you tell yourself” is how Camila commences her song. So girls, don’t you cry, just hit the dance floor and DANCE your pain away.

Extra:

Doesn’t the intro remind you a bit to Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You”?

*Update*: Apparently "Crying In The Club" "officially" samples "Genie In A Bottle" by Christina Aguilera but... are you really hearing that? Must be a really "subtle" sample.

*Update 2*: Is it that long up and down note at the end of the chorus? Come on...

Afterthought:

It puzzles me a bit that Camila would want to record a Sia co-written song, and especially release that song as her debut solo single. Sia is one amazing songwriter but Camila has been hyping everybody up for the longest time about this solo record, how she wanted to truly express HERSELF for once and for all in her music, and how she wanted to deliver 100% Camila juice, and “Crying In The Club”, although being “cute”, it just doesn’t honestly feel CAMILA CABELLO. It feels more like something a random artist received from Sia to record and they just recorded it trying to imitate her style at some degree. And I don’t think this is what Camila promised. Her next song “I Have Questions” (one of the darkest of the album), supposedly only written by her, could be what we are looking for, though. I’ll wait for that.
