Roc Nation/Sony Demanding $2.4 Million From Rita Ora If She Wants Her Full Freedom

Rita Ora’s savings account is in grave danger.

If in early December 2015 the British singer filed a suit against Roc Nation at a Los Angeles court simply demanding her freedom – Ora’s contract with the Jay-Z label established that she would release five albums with them, however only one, “Ora”, has been produced to date - for she didn’t feel supported anymore – citing Roc Nation’s business diversification into sports management and TIDAL and accusing the label of prioritizing the available resources to fund these two new services - Rita is now facing a counter-suit from Roc Nation. The label officially filed a civil suit in New York City against Rita Ora a few days ago and they are asking her for $2.4 million.

From Page Six:

"In the new suit Roc Nation counters that it’s spent over $2 million developing and marketing the British pop singer’s still unreleased second album.
The label says the British ”X Factor” judge was supposed to deliver a total of five albums when she signed with Roc Nation in 2008, but has only put out one.
Roc Nation says it scooped up Ora, 25, when she was an “unknown singer” and “has tirelessly promoted [he] career, investing millions of dollars in marketing, recording and other costs, which was instrumental in guiding Ms. Ora to her current level of success and fame.”

However, it seems it isn’t really Roc Nation the one counter-suing Rita Ora, for look at what her attorney says Jay-Z recently told Rita about all this legal drama:

"Ora’s attorney, Howard King, said, “Jay Z has personally and graciously promised Rita complete freedom from Roc Nation, the details of which are now being finalized.
“We believe that Roc Nation’s distributor, Sony Music, has required Roc Nation to file this action to preserve whatever rights Sony might have pending resolution,” King said."

According to Rita’s attorney, Sony Music is really the one behind this counter-suit. Only that they have to act by means of Roc Nation, it seems, in all Rita Ora-related matters. Roc Nation and Sony Music signed a four-year distribution deal that lasted from 2009 to 2013. Rita’s “Ora” album was released in 2012 – via Roc Nation and Columbia (Sony). Therefore, it’s understandable that Sony wants to get a piece of Rita Ora – for her only album to date was released via them in 2012. So if she wants to get out of the deal with Roc Nation, she’s going to have to pay them up, for they invested a considerable amount of money in developing her career, and they’ve done so until very recently. Rita’s latest solo single “Body On Me” was also partially released via Columbia Records. But didn’t Roc Nation’s distribution deal with Sony ended in 2013? Good question. It indeed ended in 2013, for later Roc Nation signed a new deal with Universal, but it seems that Sony did something or paid some money to keep their ties with Rita Ora intact. You see now why they’re really pissed about Rita wanting to abandon Roc Nation – and therefore them – without releasing the other 4 albums her contract established? They’ve lost a lot of money!

So you see; Jay-Z is actually being kind with Rita Ora, if her attorney’s words are true. If this counter-suit was really Roc Nation + Sony, you can bet the amount being asked Rita to pay would be at least double. But since it’s Sony the only one claiming some money back, it’s just $2.4 million. Rita better be careful with this. I hope her attorney is a good one. Because if she loses, I don’t think she has that sum of money in her bank account. All of her latest singles have underperformed, “Ora”, the album, ain’t selling anymore, and she’s just not making that much money nowadays; just a few fashion/magazines gigs here and there. But everything combined certainly couldn’t have reported her the $2.4 million Sony’s asking her to pay for her full freedom.

Who will win the case?
