Nicole Scherzinger isn’t afraid of risks. The Hawaiian singer will be releasing the ballad “On the Rocks” as her next single in the UK. The former Pussycat Dolls star is scheduled to release her sophomore solo album later in 2014 via RCA UK (she recently signed to Epic in the U.S but album release isn’t confirmed for there yet) but fans will be able to legally purchase “On the Rocks” starting from October 12th on iTunes. If you are one of the many who probably can't wait a month and a half to listen to Nicole's new single, then here's good news for you, she just premiered the audio via VEVO! (Ah. These UK music industry ways... premiering audio now, and making fans wait over a month to buy the single.).

“On the Rocks” single review

Is this Nicole Scherzinger’s first proper ballad single of her solo career? "Baby Love" was more mid-tempo than ballad, right? Anyway, first ballad of her career or not, Nicole's certainly taking risks here. Will the UK love “On the Rocks”? Will they make it go #1 in its debut week? Nicole's last single "Your Love" was unfairly blocked from #1 by Rixton's "Me and My Broken Heart" back in July. Everybody thought Nicole (and RCA UK) would keep on releasing up-tempos or mid-tempos with catchy beats as official singles to try to get that first #1 of the new Nicole Scherzinger era ASAP, but seeing now that the new single “On the Rocks” is a ballad, I have been left speechless.

Is “On the Rocks” a bad song? It isn’t. But it doesn't scream "official single" to me. If a new Nicole Scherzinger ballad isn't on the same level (or surpass that) of "I Hate This Part", then she shouldn't release it as single at all. That's my new standard for Nicole Scherzinger ballads. “On the Rocks” has a good soaring chorus but it loses excitement in the verses. What’s the song about? Nicole reflects in lyrics of the pop ballad about an old love that broke her heart as she has sips of an alcoholic drink. “And allow me to serve you this breakup on the rocks”, belts a picky Nicole in the chorus.
