Happy "New Romantics" Is Taylor Swift’s New Single From "1989"? Or Are You Team "Justice For "All You Had To Do Was Stay""?

The announcement that Taylor Swift made last week about “New Romantics” being the next single from “1989” has been received with a bittersweet taste by a large group of her fanbase - where I’m included.

On the one hand I’m happy, for “1989” is still alive, spawning new singles - something that is not so surprising considering the whole album is filled with nothing but hits - and because “New Romantics” is a nice song - and a song that demonstrates that you should not dismiss a bonus track from a deluxe version album as a potential single.

On the other hand, I’m experiencing a feeling of disappointment because the new “1989” single is not my absolute favorite “All You Had To Do Was Stay”, to which I don’t know why Taylor and Big Machine Records are still giving the back.

I mean, do these people really think “New Romantics” has more hit potential than “All You Had To Do Was Stay” ? Come on!

Also, I’m a bit preoccupied because “New Romantics” is going to be the seventh single off “1989” and I’m afraid that it becomes the last one. “Out of the Woods” was already a bit of a surprise because nobody thought that there would be another single from “1989” after the fifth (“Wildest Dreams”), and truth is that as new singles get released, the possibilities of there being another one diminishes. Therefore, I’m worried “New Romantics” could be “this time for real” the finale single. It may or may not be… but the fear (that it indeed is the last one) is real.

Just the fact that there is a tiny chance that the stellar “All You Had To Do Was Stay” never becomes a single annoys me to a great extent.

The reasons why they have chosen “New Romantics” and not “All You Had To Do Was Stay”? To tell you the truth… I mean, both songs share the same theme (heartbreak, feeling alone), but it’s true that “New Romantics” is more energetic, a bit more positive, and perhaps Taylor’s label thinks that it could work better for the summer, while “All You Had To Do Was Stay” is a bit more serious - but nevertheless it’s super catchy… but yeah a bit more serious…but whatever! I feel like Taylor isn’t being fair here. I know she knows “All You Had To Do Was Stay” is the better song… so I don’t know why she’s not fighting her label to give it the single treatment already.

Taylor should have done a poll among her fanbase so they could have picked what could be the last single from “1989”. Why? Because look at the popularity of all of the songs of the album on Last.fm. Can you see what song follows the official singles (to date) in popularity order? That’s right! It’s “All You Had To Do Was Stay”! “New Romantics” is all the way down.

What other proof you want to see to know Taylor's label hasn't made the right decision single selection-wise this time around!

I’m going to (literally) start praying for “New Romantics” to not be the last single from “1989” and that the next single finally be “All You Had To Do Was Stay”.

FYI: “New Romantics” officially impacts on Pop radio tomorrow (Feb. 23)

Happy with the new single choice?
