Coldplay, And Not Britney Spears, To Perform at 2016 Super Bowl, Pop Lovers Having Serious MELTDOWNS: Are They Right To Feel Upset?

Coldplay super bowl 2016

This week it was announced that British rock band Coldplay would be the musical guest during the halftime show of the next edition of the Super Bowl, which will take place on February 7th, 2015 at the Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, and truth is that opinions with respect to this halftime performer pick – a decision made by the NFL and Pepsi (the official sponsor of the Super Bowl halftime show) - are very polarized. Why? Because it seems many pop lovers had believed the rumors saying Britney Spears was going to be the musical star of next year’s Super Bowl halftime.

Truth is early reports pointed out that Bruno Mars would be repeating as halftime entertainer but it didn’t take long till reliable sources knocked down these allegations. Then, the last rumor indeed was that Britney Spears would be in charge of the Super Bowl 2016 halftime show, and even the Daily Mail backed this up, so you can definitely imagine the disbelief faces of pop lovers all over the US and the entire world (I mean, we got Madonna, and most recently Katy Perry. No wonder why pop maniacs would have their hopes up about another pop girl getting this job) when the Wall Street Journal published earlier this week the exclusive that the official halftime performer of next year’s Super Bowl was going to be Coldplay – not pop princess Britney Spears. The meltdowns and rants following the announcement were REAL, and especially noticeable on forums and Twitter. I read some really nasty and hateful comments towards the Chris Martin-led band and some honestly left me in shock. I knew there would be really bad reactions, but I never anticipated to read such hateful things! I really want to believe that these were written in the ‘heat’ of the moment and the these people don’t really despite Coldplay at this ridiculous level.

Check out below a few of the comments I found online:

  1. I'm pissed. Only way this can be salvaged: Bey and 1D as guests.
  2. Meltdown Activated. Army, let's go. It's time to stomp on some necks.
  3. They only have like two memorable songs.
  4. The rating is gonna be tragic welp.
  5. This can't be real. I cannot imagine them being chosen over the alleged Pop icon Britney Spears.
  6. It will be a boring ass mess of a show.
  7. Not Britney? Super Bowl Cancelled .
  8. Eh, they're kind of a snoozefest.

I personally found it too hard to believe that Brit Brit was going to be the halftime performer given that she has an exclusivity clause with Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, where she’s doing her residency shows.

And with the respect to Coldplay being the ones picked, I’m really happy about it. Although in all honesty I was kind of surprised when I read a British act would be in charge of the 2016 Super Bowl halftime show and not a ‘local’ star. For in the latest editions, all the performers have been American. The last ‘foreigner’ act were The Who all the way back in 2010.

In any case, Coldplay is going to have a difficult job choosing the setlist for the 15-minute concert they have to give at the Levi’s Stadium next year. I just hope they perform “Yellow”, “Clocks”, “The Scientist” and “Viva La Vida”...oh! and of course also “Speed of Sound”, “Fix You”, “In Your Place”….OMG! it’s going to be so hard making the final cut!

By the way, rumor has it the NFL and Pepsi want Coldplay to invite some ‘guests’ to their halftime show so the high ratings are 100% guaranteed. And word in the street is that they’re going to ask Beyoncé to jump on stage with them to perform together their “A Head Full of Dreams” collaboration “Hymn For The Weekend”. That would be amazing! Oh God, can’t the NFL make an exception for Coldplay and extend the halftime show length to over 15 minutes just this time?

Are you hesitating whether or not Coldplay have what it takes to slay a whole stadium with their music? Check out the YouTube video below to re-watch their show-stopping concert at the closing ceremony of the latest London Paralympic Games.

And don’t worry Britney Spears fans, her moment will come very soon.

Did you have a meltdown? What songs should Coldplay play and what guests should they invite?
