World Premiere: Shakira & Maluma - "Chantaje": Full Audio + Review
Shakira is back. The singer from Barranquilla, Colombia officially world premiered her brand new single titled “Chantaje” (“Blackmail” in English) today (Oct. 28). This song, boasting a reggaeton-tribal sound, is a collaboration with fellow Colombian, reggaeton singer, and “pretty boy”, Maluma, a superstar in the whole of Latin America, the Latino community in the US and Spain.
“Chantaje” is the official lead single from Shakira’s forthcoming eleventh studio album, which is not confirmed yet if it’ll be a bilingual album or an entirely-in-Spanish one.
The song “Chantaje” talks about an indecisive woman who seemingly doesn’t know how to be faithful to just one man, and who inflicts terrible suffering to the man she’s “officially” going out with. “Vas libre como el aire”, sings Maluma, which roughly translates to “You are as free as the air” - which is a nice way of saying that girl is a bit “loose”. Meanwhile, Shakira, or the woman she is portraying in this song, does’t even make an effort to deny her alleged unstable personality. She sings, “Un día digo que no, y otro que sí”. “One day I say yes and the other I say no” in English. I think someone has bipolar disorder here!

When I heard Maluma was going to feature on Shakira’s new single, I thought the song was going to be pure reggaeton, but that wasn’t the case in the end, for it shares a tribal sound too. I guess Shakira did this, added this other sound to her song so people wouldn’t label her as “unoriginal” should she had released a pure reggaeton song.
“Chantaje” sounds quite fine and sexy. The chorus is very catchy. But I feel like I haven’t been fully captivated by the first streams, but I feel too that when the steamy music video I know Shakira and Maluma will shoot drops, then right there I will become the number one fan of “Chantaje”. Yeah, that’s the only think I need right now, a killer video and I’ll turn.
