Just as the president of his label announce a couple of weeks ago, today, March 25th, Nick Jonas’ new single titled “Close” was released on all digital platforms. The song, which is a collaboration with Swedish singer Tove Lo, is the official lead single from Mr. Jonas’ forthcoming second major label solo album “Last Year Was Complicated”, due in stores on June 10th.

Nick’s eponymous solo debut was released two years ago, in 2014, and if you remember correctly, it spawned the major hit “Jealous” - which evidently secured a follow-up album for Nick. Now in 2016, I guess he thought it was the perfect time to “come back”.

First, let’s talk about why he asked Tove Lo to be his guest on this song. A) Do you think she’s on it just because she’s a labelmate and the label wanted to promote Tove Lo so they force Nick to have her on his new single?, or B) Nick’s actually a huge fan of Tove Lo and it was one of his dreams to collaborate with her, and it just happened that the song they did was so good it got picked as lead single?

Nick’s “Close” song hears him keeping it up with his alternative R&B/smooth R&B sound that he debuted on his first album. And although this may be perceived as a “safe” move, I think it was clever. I’m sure Nick has heard about the “second album syndrome”, where artists whose debut album has been a success, sees its follow-up fail, and if sticking with his same ol’ sound will help him prevent this syndrome, then I’m supporting! If “Last Year Was Complicated” turns out be a chart success too, then you can bet that for his third album Nick will give us a new sound and show more “evolution”.

Really loving “Close” (almost on the same level of “Jealous”), the production is exquisite, and his and Tove Lo’s vocals blend super well!
