World Premiere: Missy Elliott - “WTF” [Single Review + Music Video]

After so many years of hiatus, Missy Elliot comes back with new music.

The American female rapper strongly returned to the music scene with her performance with Katy Perry at this year’s Super Bowl. In view of the amazing surge in sales of her most popular songs, some of them making it to the Top 10 of the iTunes Top 100 chart in the US, her label clearly knew this was the right time to make Missy return for real.

There’s still no exact date for the release of her much-anticipated seventh studio album, which Missy is currently hard-working on and possibly finishing, but you can definitely expect it for early 2016.

What is a reality right now is the lead single of the new Missy Elliott era. The first single of her upcoming album is titled “WTF (Where They From)” and it’s a song produced by Pharrell Williams. “WTF” is a percussion-heavy, upbeat and catchy track. In her new single, Missy raps about how we all should be feeling super proud of the customs and traditions from our places of birth.

Overall, the song is kind of hot, but I feel like Missy could have worked with a different producer other than Mr. Pharrell for her lead single. This production is typical Pharrell, and it really doesn’t offer anything new. It’s like Missy is still a little in the past. Although, I repeat, the song is kind of okay, it’s just that I would have liked for Missy to have gone a step forward music-wise. In any case, my opinion won’t matter much if “WTF” becomes a smash hit.

WTF (Where They From)” world premiered on US radios this Thursday morning, November 12th. And at the same time, 9 a.m (ET), the music video for the new Missy single was released on VEVO. The “MV” was filmed a couple of months ago in downtown L.A. It shows Missy feeling comfortable in her new body, and slaying some cool choreographies.

What do you think of the song and video?
