I don’t get it. On Wednesday night (Nov. 4), Rita Ora was one of the performers at the 2015 edition of the MOBO Awards in the UK. What does ‘MOBO’ stand for? “Music of Black Origin”. I mean, is that really what Rita sings?

In times when the black community sees how sales of albums of genres of their 'property' (say soul, or R&B) decrease for black artists but increase for white (more 'mainstream') ones (e.g Adele, Sam Smith, etc) and in times when there is an important disapproval about how black people is profiled and treated in the streets for just having that skin color - although it’s true this is more of a problem in the US than in the UK - I don’t understand how award shows of black music (e.g, BET Music Awards or the MOBO Awards) aren’t more aware of this predicament and don’t try to be more protective of their own culture. Why is Rita Ora invited to perform at the MOBO Awards? Do organizers maybe think that her new single “Body On Me” is real R&B music? I’m just so floored. But not only did Rita sing “Body On Me” at the First Direct Arena in Leeds, England last night, she also sang “Poison”. More “music of black origin”, right?

Other performers yesterday at the 2015 MOBO Awards were: Naughty Boy with Arrow Benjamin and Shezar, replacing Beyoncé, who performed “Runnin’ (Lose It All)” together, or Ella Eyre, who slayed with a heartfelt performance of her newest single “Even If”, from her album “Feline".

Thoughts?
