The Weeknd’s “Starboy” Album Sold 366k Copies First Week, Gets Number One But Suffers Comparative Decrease…

the weeknd first week sales

The final numbers are in.

Canadian singer The Weeknd's third studio album "Starboy" (released in the US on November 25th) sold 366,000 copies (sales plus streaming) in its first week. 227,000 was the figure of traditional sales.

Are these first-week sales of "Starboy" A HISTORIC FEAT for The Weeknd? Unfortunately not. 2015's "Beauty Behind the Madness" moved 412,000 copies in its first week out. Why the decrease? Well, before "Beauty Behind the Madness" hit stores in August 2015 there was a really big hype, bigger than "Starboy" in my opinion, for the album because of "Earned It" - the worldwide smash hit from the "Fifty Shades of Grey" soundtrack" - and because the lead singles "The Hills" and "Can't Feel My Face" were immense chart-toppers, bigger than what "Starboy" and "I Feel It Coming" are so far. So maybe this is the motive of the decrease in sales. Because "Starboy" really is a great album and a cohesive one. I bought it and I really thought this could have been a historic one in sales for TW... oh well.

A feel-good consolation?

Still, congratulations are in order for The Weeknd for obtaining the SECOND Billboard Top 200 number one album of his career (2013's "Kiss Land" only reached #2).
