Recommended New Music: Priory - "Weekend" [Review]

Posting this on a weekend is only fitting. It’s time for you to meet Priory. This Portland-based duo (made of Brandon Rush and Kyle Sears) released in late June their official debut single called “Weekend”, and it is catching on really fast in the US (must be the fact that it is a summertime anthem, huh?). Billboard’s named Priory an 'Emerging' band, “Weekend” is running up the Spotify Viral chart, and most-recently Los Angeles’ ALT 98.7 radio called Priory's debut single the “best new song of the year”.

Bio: Brandon Rush and Kyle Sears met in the early 2000s, they both lived together in a flophouse in Portland, their friendship consolidated really fast based on their common passion for music, and in 2011 they formed a band. Backed a local label, the band released a full-length folk-inspired album but things didn’t go as expected, however just a few months later, the two friends decided to try luck as a duo, managed to build up a studio in an old cement plant, and totally revamped their sound. Now called Priory, the duo’s sound can be defined as a little bit of electro-pop, dance and psych pop. Definitely poppier than their folk beginnings! Somehow Warner Bros. got the chance to listen to a few tracks Priory had recorded, loved them, signed them and the rest is history!

Their first single “Weekend” was premiered via SoundCloud on June 19th, sent to iTunes on June 30th, and the song's official lyric video premiered on YouTube on July 1st. Priory is currently working on their debut album which they hope to release this year.

“Weekend” single review

If I had to make a list of my must-play songs for this summer, Priory’s “Weekend” would be on it. Featuring a joyous melody, a soaring chorus, and lyrics the youth will definitely appreciate (“Hell yeah, I just got paid, it's time to get this started / Tonight I might just lose my way”), “Weekend” is the first song you need to play on your smartphone/MP3 device the second you finish school, college or work on a Friday.

Hit or Miss?
