New Music: Martin Garrix (ft. Usher) - "Don't Look Down" [Full Audio / Review]

usher dont look down cover

While Usher puts the final touches to his eighth studio album (which WILL be coming out in the last quarter of 2015 after having to announce last year a delay due to “not being mentally ready”), the R&B king is having fun helping out the promising Martin Garrix and swimming in his EDM beats. The 18-year-old Dutch DJ is a labelmate of Usher (RCA Records) and will be releasing an album (his debut) later this year too and the first single from his EDM-based project is the collaboration with Usher titled "Don't Look Down". See? This way Usher gets to release "new music" without having to release a new album yet, and Martin keeps consolidating his name in the DJ's world with top class collaborations. Everyone wins, well, actually RCA wins.

"Don't Look Down" will be released on iTunes tomorrow, March 17, but you can stream it in full right now! (Go to the bottom of the post).

EDM vs. R&B

Usher opened the doors to EDM ever since he did “Without You” with David Guetta a few years ago and he hasn’t closed that door yet. Are you ok with it? Me, I’m kind of ok because I do think Usher and the EDM beats make one hell of a combination and it always results in a terrific party-ready tune, but I do feel too Usher should be “protecting” his image a bit, especially when he's got a new album coming out soon and fans are expecting him to really go back to his R&B roots with it. Releasing a new EDM track isn't probably the best strategy when you want to be a fully respected R&B singer again. I mean, “Looking 4 Myself” had a couple of EDM and pop songs, and it took 2 years for it be certified gold, and it's far away from being platinum, and that ain't too good for Usher's standards. I remember reading a fan comment that was like: "Usher, please cut the EDM crap, we want the old you back". It's kind of true. Usher’s last album’ sales weren’t the greatest and maybe people want the “Confessions” Usher back.

"Don't Look Down" review

Amid a Martin Garrix-produced EDM beat that knows when to be slower and more uptempo, Usher tells the lady he just met to forget about looking down ever again as with him the ever-lasting ‘high’ is guaranteed. Up is the only direction their relationship will go apparently. Lucky her. It seems all Usher relationships are problem-free.

Martin’s EDM production is nice but not the greatest I've heard this year, but Usher’s vocals in "Don't Look Down" are really impressive. He hits the high notes so effortlessly.

Hit or Miss?
