charli xcx break the rules

Not only did she reveal the title and release date of her upcoming studio album “Sucker”, but Charli XCX also premiered her new single “Break the Rules” online via SoundCloud today, August 18th. This becomes the official follow-up to her hit “Boom Clap”, and the second single from the British singer-songwriter’s sophomore album due in stores on October 21st via Atlantic Records.

On “Break the Rules”, Charlie XCX recently said the following: “The song is inspired by a lot of the things I was listening to whilst in Sweden at the end of last year”, before adding....“I spent about a month making a punk record and covering songs by Swedish punk bands like Snuffed By The Yakuza and stuff. This song was written when I came out of the other side of that punk phase and translated it into something more pop. Obviously, it’s about not giving a f*ck.

“Break the Rules” single review

Charlie XCX has in fact said she's scrapped a full punk album. So this certainly must be one of the songs from that album, but altered somewhat so it can cater to the Pop radios. The “punk” spirit can be found in the lyrics and in the production of the song, but the melody is so breezy and fun! “Break the Rules” is no “Boom Clap” – it just isn't as catchy or poppy - but the new Charlie XCX single is definitely an anthem that most of all adolescents and kids can relate to. It’s anthem about forgetting about school/or duties and just wanting to dance. (Moms will probably forbid their children to listen to this song but WHATEVER…). It’s also Charli XCX’s badass attitude in the song that makes it so interesting.
