Colin Kaepernick was given the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award at last night’s 2017 Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year Awards. There was no surprise there. Everybody knew the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback would get that valuable award, which is given to an athlete who uses their platform to promote change, for all of Colin’s activism within the NFL world to demand racial equality and more social justice in America. However, the true surprise of the night yesterday was the person in charge of handing the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award to Colin. It was no other than fellow equality advocate Beyoncé! And Queen B decided to utter a little speech herself before giving the award to Colin. Read the full transcript below and check out the video immediately after:
“Thank you Colin Kaepernick. Thank you for your selfless heart, and your conviction. Thank you for your personal sacrifice. Colin took action with no fear of consequence or repercussion only hope to change the world for the better. To change perception, to change the way we treat each other, especially people of color. We’re still waiting for the world to catch up. It’s been said that racism is so American, that when we protest racism, some assume we are protesting America. So, let’s be very clear. Colin has always been very respectful of the individuals who selfless serve and protect our country and our communities and our families. His message is solely focused on social injustice for historically disenfranchised people. Let’s not get that mistaken.
Powerful words, Bey!
And now watch Colin Kaepernick’s full accepting speech:
