Tough crowd.

I don't know whose idea it was to have Alicia Keys perform before the Real Madrid vs. Atletico de Madrid UEFA Champions League Final 2016 but it certainly was a bad idea. Don't get me wrong, Alicia did her thing on the field; she delivered great performances of "Girl On Fire", "Empire State of Mind", and her newest single "In Common", and the spectacle with all the dancers and the decorative paraphernalia it was all good. The problem was that an Alicia Keys mini-concert just doesn't suit a UEFA Champions League Final pre-show. Mini-concerts by famous singers may work at the Super Bowl or at an All-Stars game in the USA, but things are different in Europe and in top soccer/football. The crowd at the San Siro stadium last night (May 28) in Italy were there to witness a soccer game, tension in the venue could be cut with a knife for odds were 50/50 for both teams, probably 90% of the match-goers didn't know who Alicia Keys was, they were counting down the seconds for the match to start, and all in all, Alicia's mini-concert kind of messed up a bit with the beautiful soccer environment that was going on at the stadium. People were cheering in favor of their favorite teams, when suddenly the PA system announced R&B star Alicia Keys would be singing three songs. And "Girl On Fire" suddenly started playing. Curious people in the crowd would use their phones to film the performance, others would take selfies with down-there Alicia, but in general terms there was no real excitement whatsoever about her performance. Not even when Alicia Keys screamed "MILAN!" (the final match was held in Milan, Italy) or "MADRID!" (both teams were from the city of Madrid, Spain) you could not hear real cheering from the crowd. They were not entertained, and they wanted AK to be done quick so the game would kick off. And when Alicia's pre-show mini-concert was finally over, you couldn't hear many applauses either. As if the crowd were like; "OK, bye. Now where is Cristiano Ronaldo?". And you know what's worse? I think Alicia was really upset for the tough crowd - but since she is a professional she served "excited face" all throughout the performance.

In summary, UEFA executives made a mistake by trying to "Americanize" this year's Champions League Final. Next year there should be no music, just soccer.

Thoughts?
